A Breathing Space for Carers
“To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts” – Thoreau.
Caring for or supporting a relative or friend who is living with a serious long-term illness can result in strain and stress that has physical, emotional and mental effects. If those effects build up over time, they can sometimes feel overwhelming. This workshop is designed to introduce carers to skills that may help them to manage and reduce the stress that can come with intensive caring responsibilities.
Mindfulness is the main skill you will be learning at this workshop, and most of the practices and presentations are based on learning how to develop and use this skill. Mindfulness is the practice of being more present and alive to our experience, moment by moment in a kind and non-judgemental way. Mindfulness enables us to know more deeply the physical, emotional and mental aspects of our experience which helps us to cultivate the ability to respond creatively and constructively to situations rather than reacting automatically and reinforcing old habits. Knowing ourselves better allows for the emergence of more spaciousness in our lives.
At this workshop you will you will be introduced to exercises, ways of approaching and thinking about your experience and meditation practices that develop the skill of mindfulness. The meditation practices we will explore are; the Body Scan, which enhances awareness of the body and helps us be more grounded; the Mindfulness of Breathing, which develops calm and clarity of mind; and the Three-Minute Breathing Space, a short practice designed to bring a few moments of mindfulness into your day at times of particular difficulty or stress, or just to break the relentless busyness of the day.
